Breaking the Mold

Individuality suits you.

You wear it like a suit

of armor,

The chain mail and steel protect you

from the horrors of conformity

and normality.

No, that is your greatest fear:

For others to see you

as a cog in the machine,

a mannequin,

a face in the crowd,

a nobody.

You laugh at the irony of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”,

because he hints that your life is predetermined for you.

Other people read it differently,

but you know it’s there.

Who’s to say your life won’t change

from the choices you make–

from the clothes you wear,

to the way you style your hair–

who’s to say that,

in all of life’s mysteries,

how your life ends

can’t be different than everyone else’s?
