Recently, while following a discussion on Facebook concerning global warming, all discussion came to an end with the ultimate definitive argument, at least, according to one debater: global warming is a farce because it is well known that the universe is only 10,000 years old. Really? I had recently encountered a bishop named Ussher in my reading, so I went looking for that reference.

Sure enough, I found that the universe began at midday on the 23rd of October, 4004 BC. That makes the universe, that’s the universe mind you, all those millions and millions of stars you see on a dark and starry night, only a maximum of 6,000 years old. It seems that in 1650 Archbishop James Ussher conducted his own literalistic exegesis of all those begets and begots in the book of Genesis, and determined this indisputable fact. 10,000 years was later determined to be more accurate…
